Homebase 10% day Friday and Sat, are there extra discounts to be had?

Homebase appear to have 10% off today+Sat, and I need to splash some cash on stuff anyway.

Do they still do Nectar points? Are there any other Homebase-based bonuses to be had?

They've never done nectar. When they were sold off by Sainsbury (Years ago), they brought out their own card "Spend N Save". Never bothered to work out if it means much, as I only go there if desparate and its a 10% weekend.

The Screwfix trade counter in Reading also has 10% off this weekend.

Of course you won't save as much as at Homebase because Screwfix's prices are generally a lot lower :-)

So all the more reason to go to Homebase then - clearly a better deal.

The message from Andy Hall contains these words:

Oh, don't. I had a boss once who couldn't grasp that I'd bought 100 of something rather than the 96 he told me to buy because the price break at 100 meant the total bill for the order was less than buying 96 of 'em. This was in the eighties and they were Burr Brown DAC-80 D>A convertors which at the time were about £80 each. He insisted I send the extra four back - which I pretended to do. Two days later he was screaming 'cos he'd blown one up and needed another in a hurry (which at 1-off prices was getting on for £100, plus P+P). The look on his face when I handed him one of the spares was worth all the hassle of working there.

There's a cultural factor as well. It's interesting to see how business is done in different countries.

For example, in Germany, it is fairly typical for things to be sold at close to list price (I am talking about professional use products mainly), and a high level of service is expected. In Holland, it is common to publish a high list price and then to be prepared to discount down or negotiate. That is expected, and quite often it seems that the amount of discount achieved is far more important than the final price paid.

I'm afraid that in the UK, we generally do not have a clue about how and when to negotiate on price and service/product offered. People just don't seem to be sensitive to it or are afraid to ask. It's surprising just how often one can get a price reduction in places that one wouldn't expect. Equally, on the other side, people are suckers for the "deals" from double glazing companies.

But if you buy more stuff from Screwfix then you can save as much as at Homebase.

You'll spend more on petrol getting the extra weight home though.

Adn we have trading standards departments who prosecute grocers for selling spuds by pounds and publicans for selling German beer in litres.

I once had to buy an expensive ultra centrifuge and had a hell of a time when I realised it was (much) cheaper to buy it as components and assemble it myself than to pay to have a complete one built and delivered. Then I got months of earache because it "came off the wrong budget".

Yup - ordered a shower enclosure from HB and it came in an Argos van
