Hobby drill.

I have an ancient Ryobi cordless hobby drill. The sort with a collet chuck. Now defunct after several repairs including new batteries.

It gets light use - drilling the odd PCB hole etc in situ. Minor grinding, etc.

I do have a 'mains' one - but in this case the cord is a pain.

What I'd like is a recommendation for a new cordless one, with a docking station which is safe to leave on charge - the old one had a crude charger, which cooked the batteries.

As physically small as possible. The Ryobi is a nice enough size - I don't want anything 'chunky'. Li-ion should allow it to be smaller?

Just to add, the Dremel Li-Ion is a bit larger in diameter than the Ryobi. I'd rather have one the same size or smaller.

Got a photo or some dimensions etc so we know what kind of size we are aiming at?

The Ryobi is approx 40 x 30mm at its thickest - just over the motor at the sharp end. Making it a very comfortable fit to my hand. It's 240mm long - but that's not so important. It uses 6 X AA batteries in two rows of 3 which allows it to be slim.

Other thing I do want is one which docks to recharge. Having to remove the battery is too much of a fiddle. So it also needs to switch off properly when charged. But it will only be powered when I switch the 'bench' power on - so not 24/7.

Don't leave it plugged in then. Every time you switch on the bench supply it will get a little charge and this will eat into its life.

Don't be silly. A decent charger will just look at the battery and if it's fully charged do nothing.

I want the unit ready for use at all times.

They don't come with decent chargers, neither do drills, etc.

So charge it every 3 months.

They can do, I've a Bosch 14V NiCD drill and hedge trimmer I've got both a 'smart' and dumb charger - the drill was a blue bosch and came with the smart charger.

I've also some 10.8v Li-ion stuff and the charger for that is smart. In fact given the nature of Li-ion batteries it probably needs to be.

And how is that helpful it in then runs out midway through a work session?

You've tested every single one?

Tell you what, Dennis. You decide what suits you and leave the same to me.

You obviously have no idea how I like things to be.
