Help with tumble dryer please

I have a Hotpoint Aquarius TDC30N which tumbles with no heat, searched the net to find a similar fault which suggested replacing both cut-outs, did this and still no heat from the element.

Tested the element for continuity which is fine.

When plugged-in and switched on there is mains voltage across the elements but when I set the machine in motion the mains to the element drops off.....strange!!

Any suggestions.........

How did you test for continuity on the machine? If you used a multi-meter, then it would show voltage or resistance on the element, but if you used a mains tester screw-driver, then the reading is totally wrong, and you only have a live supply to the machine and no neutral to make the full circuit. This explains why the little light in screw-driver goes out when you turn the machine on.

The element is broken somewhere along the line, and the best test you can do on it is look carefully along the full length of it. MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS UNPLUGGED WHEN YOU DO THIS!!!!!

There are also thermostats fitted all over these machines. One will be connected to one end of the element. Another will probably be fitted to the outside casing of the motor, and another most likely on or n the mains switch itself. Make sure all of these are clean and clear of fluff and other bits of debris. Also make sure they are working properly and making full contact with all other electrical switching and wiring components.

Some machines have a RESET button fitted, and this trips off if an over-heat condition has been detected. They all need to be manually reset, so have a look around the machine, most likely on the back near the top, and see if your machine has one, and then press it in.

Make sure all vents and filters are clean and clear. Make sure the motor and belt drive are full working and free spinning. Any wear on these parts can cause strain which the safety cut-out devices will detect as fault and trip the machine, or just the element, off.

Use your eyes on this one, and have a really close look at everything. A torch is a good help to see inside properly as well.

Something wrong there.

On ours the elements can't be energised unless the motor is turning, providing a 'cooling' air flow across the elements.

If you have a DVM across the elements it means that you have the rear cover off, and that also results in no airflow across the elements, which should be up at bright red, just about ready to burn out.

BTW. There may be a third thermal cutout, monitoring the exhaust as it leaves the machine. It is down the bottom, near the motor, and you have to take the whole back off to get at it. For a complete dismantle I've found it best to lay the whole machine on it's face.
