Help!!!!

I installed a new basin in my bathroom yesterday, and all went well until i turned the water supply back on. I have cold water downstairs (running of the main pipe in to the house), but have no water either hot or cold upstairs, and no hot water downstairs!!! The toilet also isnt filling up.

With the hot and cold i get a very very tiny stream in from the bath taps & new sink taps, but the hot doesnt last but a few seconds.

It seems like there is either air or debris in the pipes?? The tanks upstairs in the loft are full of water. Theres no knocking sound.

I was thinking about getting a hose pipe and connecting one end to my downstairs tap that works and going in the loft and forcing water through the system - does this sound like a good idea?

Thx for looking!

I have a healthy pair of lungs and very minimal plumbing (electric immersion with combined header tank at, er, head height - probably why I get so many air locks ;-). So I connect part of one of those hair washing thingies to the basin tap and blow until I hear gurgling.

Probably best done with the heating turned off ;-)

Other than sucking/blowing -- which is beyond my lungs! -- the standard way to clear an air lock is to force water from the working main back through the hot water system, via an adjacent tap -- that is, you do the hose trick you were thinking of, but it runs from the working CW through a HW tap, not up into the loft.
