Bizarrely enough Mathew's posts are threading correctly as they do have the correct 'Reference:' headers (btw Mathew, you can view the critical headers by clicking the link 'view message in original format' or similar). N Thornton's however do not so there must be some difference there. However, that is enough for today as I am off for some late beers with chum#1 but will try to look into this tomorrow.

Btw: I did notice that Mathew's post does have the correct Re: in the subject indicating a follow up whereas NT's do not, maybe something to look at here, poss finger trouble; is there a follow up button that gives the correct reply & another which gives the broken thread?

Just had a quick look at a thread in both groups.google.co.uk and groups-beta.google.com There are indeed two different reply buttons on groups-beta. I don't have a google account, so can't try it but the standard "Reply" link at the the bottom of each message has a fairly short URL, with just an "inreplyto" code. If you click the show options link at the top of the message, there is another "Reply" link at the top, aling with "Reply to Author", etc. This link URL as a whole load more information. So, if Mr Thornton is listening, perhaps he could try this and see where the reply turns up.

Which google are you using? .com, .co.uk, beta, what addr? It might solve the problem with my posts.

I doubt Mr Thornton is listening, reading, whatever!. He has aleardy been told how to stop this, but because he uses Google it doesn't seem to get through.

I haven't searched, but aren't there other web-based usenet services around? I know of google groups (nuff said) and mailgate.org, which someone mentioned here the other day wasn't accepting new punters; but aren't there others??

Yes, the screenshots look very promising, I may give it a go.

Difficult to recommend an objective 'best', but here's a popularity sorted list from another group:

FWIW, this post appeared in the right place for me (as does your parallel message done using 'reply'). I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird.

All in correct places here. Wonder if google have changed something again. I notice there are User-Agent and Injection-Info headers that weren't in your earlier starting this thread.

It has

Message-ID: References:

in the headers. The References line is what is wanted to keep people happy.

I use Turnpike and have done for years

I have this too, yes it's very good as an online reader

I've been playing with this for the past few days, seems good, it's an offline newsreader

I've been using groups-beta.google.com, and as far as reply method is concerned I've just been clicking the 'Reply' link which appears after clicking 'Show Options'.

Not knocking, but why use google when Usenet works ok as it is ?

Because some people can't work out how to either set up or use an NNTP server / account ?...

There is a tiny minority of people who, due to computer access restrictions (such as work place computers), can't install a news a reader not an account so are forced to us a web based service such as Google.

Because, as discussed, web access is all I have at work.
