Good smoke detector?

Looking for opinions on which smoke detector to buy.

Mains powered sounds like a good idea, saves on battery cost.

Interlinked would be nice as one will be in an outbuilding.

I want a decent make, one that will not f*ck up like the cheap ones do. I've got a couple of cheap ones just now and they keep going off for no reason. No dust in them or anything. They also run the battery flat in a matter of months. They're optical. Is radiation better?

Don't tit about with battery powered ones, use mains interlinked ones with (rechargeable) battery backup.

Grade D as a minimum:

I use Kidde kit, good stuff with a decent 6 year warranty.

Available from TLC

that's very expensive. I've found some cheaper ones that say "CE, BSI, SAI Global approved, comply with EN14604, AS3786 and UL217 standard". Does that mean anything?

IMHO Scotty should not bother with any smoke detectors - fingers crossed etc.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get a bad smoke detector? That's what is going to get you...

Absolutely, that's his usual MO. Someone beam him up. He has a degree, you know.

(usually, he asks a question, gets a few replies then proceeds to tell the respondents why they're wankers).

You really think that ukp 27 is very expensive for reliable kit that is designed to save your life? It may possibly be worth you saving up for it.

That is possibly one the dumbest things I have heard you say (which is saying something).

Still cheap. Pay the money get over it. They last 10 years so that is £8/year.

What in - medieval media studies?

I'd prefer living amongst a 1000 clones of him rather than all the chavs in Hastings. At least he's mostly harmless.

Earlier you said you wanted a "decent make". When someone recommends a decent make (Kidde are) you complain about the price! You get what you pay for!

That has to be a record for the most stupid remark ever.

Incidentally, I use Firex alarms. No problems here. I picked them mainly because I could get the useful pattresses from the same supplier. They use dry batteries for backup, but that's no great problem.

Firex is now owned ny Kidde.

The radiation type use a radioactive source so no light to be on all the time, though eventually the source does die of course.
