Getting carpet out from aluminium gripper tread

I have to try and fix some creaking wooden floorboard so the carpet has to come up. Is there some gizzmo to use to get the carpet out from under the aluminium gripper/tread things? In the past I've used longnose pliers, steel rules and ingnorance! Usually end up mangling the rod and it doesn't do the carpet much good either. Thanks for any tips how to do this.

A 6" bolster chisel - preferably one where the edge isn't damaged. Tap it between the carpet top and the bar and lever open slightly.

Ease an edge corner up, then kick the carpet with the flat of your foot towards the gripper whilst pulling up on the edge piece you loosened.
