Gate springy closing device ...

Hi,

I'm looking for an automatic (but non-electric) gate closing device for an old gate at the end of the alleyway under my house. It needs to be more than a spring as I want a damper too to slow it down before it goes bang!

There are a couple of photos of the gates here:

're heavyish wooden things - however it's only the right-hand gate I wasnt to close automatically. (The left one is kept closed 99% of the time anyway) They're about 5' high, and the gate is more or less flat against the right-hand wall when fully open.

And I've really no idea where to start looking - any pointers, or clues?

Thanks,

Gordon

Get a standard spring closer and use an old piece of carpet to stop the slam. Does the gate have a latch? If it does, then latches usually need a hard slam action to engage them. The carpet stop the noise, but it allows the gate to latch properly.

Something like these

should fit nicely.

Thanks for that link. It's a very heavy door, (I can't lift it off the hinges myself) but that site seems to have some that might do the job, (or I can double up 2 of them) and it does have a latch - currently removed because the neighbours kids keep slamming the gate and it broke, but it's a light mechanism.

Thanks,

Gordon

Ensure the hinges are well lubricated - it may surprise you how easily it will close if you reduce the friction.
