fuse blows on one switch.. when you turn the light off!

Hi guys, just taken out a horrible lumo tube from my kitchen and now putting all back together. Got all the lights downstairs working but one. When I turn the main fuse back on in the box, the lights are all on, but when i turn out the odd one at the switch, the main fuse blows. Its all being done from one ceiling rose. But the light that is mysteriously blowing has odd wiring, it comes out of the ceiling as earth, yellow, red and blue. The way the light works is i have the yellow going to the live and the blue going to neutral and earth to earth. this is the only way the light turns on, so i am left with a red that is loose, either way it still blows when you turn it off. any help would be top! thanks alot.

Those colurs would indicate 2-way switching. Do you have another switch somewhere that does not appear to do anything?

not as far as i'm aware dave, just the one switch for the light that keeps blowing...

Well as I said unless a cowboy has done the wiring ( not unknown) those are the normal colours for 2-way switching.

Should have said ' were the normal colours'. New colours are different.

anyone have any ideas as to where they should be attached to make the light work for single switch? still blowing when you turn it 'off' i guess its back to front somewhere..

Have a look at how the switch is wired, if its double switched you should see wires to each of the 3 connections.

Next time, make a note of which wire is which before you remove the old fitting.

Now you will have to try and follow the circuit and work out which wire is which. A diagram of how lighting circuits work may be of help to you.

This one should not be hard to fix. Switch has gotten miswired, and instead of going L to switched L its now L to N or E. Just test the connections at the lampholder to see which is always on L and which is the lampholder's switched L connection, note which switch wire colours go to these 2, and at the wallswitch connect those colours into the switch.
