Fridge Freezer types

Relation needs new F/F as the fridge on his 20 year old one has packed up. Not worth investigating due to age so a replacement is proposed.

Couldn't find good source of info - do new ones have 2 motors / compressors - or is the refrigerant valved in some way to enable the two thermostats to control each part? (We have discounted a single thermostat type).

We have also discounted a frost free one as the additional complications don't seem to offer him any significant advantage - as he says, defrosting now and again is a good discipline to check the food and to clean it.

Any advice I can pass on to help with choice where reliability, economy are significant. He lives alone and doesn't make big demands on such an appliance.

I just had the freezer in a similar age one pack up. I paid extra at the time for a dual compressor type, so at least I have a fridge whilst I think what to do about replacing the unit.

The ones I've noticed more recently are all single compressor but a valve allows separate control of the fridge and freezer sections, unlike the single compressor types of ~20 years ago. It may be that the older type still exist too -- I don't know.

Absolutely agree there.
