freud router collet issue

Hi there

I've got a a Freud FT2000 router. Works just fine, but I'm using a 1/4" rebater and the adaptor provided doesn't securely fit the bit in the spindle. I've tried really tightening it but it's still loose.

The 1/2" collet works just fine but the 1/4" collet won't tighten to the bit.

Anyone else come accross this problem with Frued routers?

The Freud will take the standard Elu collets which I have always used without problems. I never liked adapters per se and the Freud one never impressed me.

A few other things to watch out for is that the adapter and the bits are actually the same size (i.e.) 6mm and 1/4" are NOT the same. Also are you bottoming the bit in the collet before tightening it ? Some machines pull the bit down when the collet is being tightened. If it is already bottoming then it will not tighten correctly. And finally, everything is clean, isn't it?

Used my 1/4" adaptor the other day for the first time... seemed to work just fine. It was a close fit out of the collet (but easy to slide the bit into), Tightening up in the collect held the whole lot pretty solidly.

If Freud is the same as NuTool then I've got exactly the same problem. Gave up in the end and just use the 1/2" tools.

All is clean and being a 1/4" bit in a 1/2" router the bit isn't long enough to bottom - but I take your point though.

The problem is that once the collet is in the nut (which is a struggle) and is tightened the bit is still slack. It almost feels like the collet is

3/8"!! Wierd I know, maybe they shipped a metric collet.

I will take gent up on trying to buy an ELU collet.
