I AM NOT A LAWYER but my understanding is:

Freehold is YOU own the land the flat is sat on, taking into account it may be sat on top of another flat etc.....

Leasehold is where somebody else owns the LAND and YOU pay a ground rent usually annually

Ask his solicitor or look at his paperwork from his original purchase, does he have an 'annual' bill to a Landlord

Maybe Maybe not who knows??

The message from "Scabbydug" contains these words:

We don't have 'freehold and/or leasehold' in Scotland, anyhow.

That was kicked into touch some years ago.

Very relevant. We don't have freehold/leasehold in the same way up here. It used to be feudal tenure but the interfering gobshites at t' Parly changed a system that had worked well for about a thousand years because it offended their socialist sensibilities.

It is.

The terms freehold and leasehold are English, and do not appy.

His selling lawyer will be able to advise further.

Actually yes we do! I live in one, OK it's a 500 yr lease!! I know it's not that common in Scotland but it does exist.

Including the principle of not actually owning the land the house is built on?
