Free Corner Fridge (really free!)

OK - so this is DIY so there has to be a catch, but it really is free. This is a 1200L Norcool Corner Fridge a bit like those at

except that it has a top mounted refrigeration unit.

This top mount design wasn't a great success because above the fridge got rather hot and the fridge struggled if the kitchen temp got above

26 deg.

New, these cost about £4,000. The catch is there is work that needs to be done so what better place to offer it than here.

This one is about 20 years old. The refrigeration unit works but there are two fans (one on the evaporator one on the condenser) which stopped working ages ago and were replaced with computer type fans - which were not particularly good. You would need to re-jig the fans and replace the thermostat (which failed years ago and my "temporary" replacement has just been removed!). Any decent refrigeration place should be able to get it fully functional again.

You could also replace the refrigeration part completely and have a split unit which would be much better. This design is basically an insulated box to which you attach separate refrigerator parts.

The fridge structure is pretty good, it's powder coated steel and usually has MDF panels attached to match the kitchen units. The lower hinge (a simple pin and hole assembly) is corroded and needs replacing

- it wouldn't be difficult to make a replacement (norcool still carry spares as well)..

The powder coated steel wire shelves need repainting.

All the door shelves and fittings are still OK.

Assembly is simple - its just flat panels and is assembled using built in cam locks and sealant - some of the foam sealing strip used to close gaps when the panels are fitted obviously would need replacing - its just standard foam strip. It's much easier to build than an Ikea table. All the panels are sound and rust free, the floor could possibly do with a repaint on the outside where there is some surface corrosion.

It flat packs., but you would need a large estate, van or trailer to take it away.

Seems a pity to bin it so if anyone wants it they can have it (collect from Hemel Hempstead). If suitably impressed a donation to Remap

would be nice but other than that its free.

(It has been replaced by a commercial fridge , OC House rather unfairly declared she wasn't having me fix it again after, in the best traditions of uk.diy it ran using an old beer cooler on the kitchen floor and the remains of a dehumidifier in the fridge for XXXX months following the last fan failure).
