Foundation depth

There was a large Victorian house near us in a dilapidated condition and its just been demolished.

The groundwork is being done for whatever they are going to build on the site and they have gone down around 3 maybe 4 metres.

How far down for a house? Does this indicate they are going to build 3 or more stories?

Just interested.

In a similar position, I would have a look at my local authority's planning site - should make it clear what has been approved.

Maybe they are having a cellar - or even an underground house? :-)

Ther is no need to go much beyond 2 meters for simple tree-root and stability issues on a normal house..so it sounds like as you say either a lot is going on top - although I would have expected that to mean wider not deeper, or some underground space is being created.

Why not aks the builders? most are happy to chat.

A nuclear waste repository in your street is really nothing to worry about. Honest.

3-4 meters is not unusual these days, there is a lot better understanding of how foundations work over time and the old shallow ones are a bit unpredictable.

Maybe they are building a bomb shelter? Or an underground heat store?

One metre should be sufficient for a two-storey house on solid (not made up) ground.

My guess is that the old house had a cellar and that they've had to go below the level of the bottom of that - or maybe the new house is having one.
