Flies !

For the past few days, our house has been plagued with flies. Small ones (I'm not an expert. They are small and black). Not bluebottles.

Our HV zapper seems useless. And we're not big fans of flyspray.

Obviously we have windows open (with nets).

Just seems to be more than usual ... I know it's probably an overactive imagination (too much CSI) but I have this worry there's a dead body nearby ....

Have a look around for some piece of vegetable/fruit that's got lost behind something and started going off. I've had this a couple of times, and found a long lost onion, and a beetroot, which had escaped from their bags and were slowly going off, supporting an army of tiny flies.

Oh, and carniverous plants are excellent for mopping up flies in the house - normally I hardly ever see one, but the carniverous plants do catch some.

Not all flies are attracted to the light/UV.

Quite a likely source of fruit flies which do tend to be at the small end of the fly scale. They'll also find stuff in the bin if any bits of food find their way into there.

We have an HV zapper mini tennis racket thing. I have found the best technique is not to swat wildly at the fly as if it were a tennis ball, but to let the fly settle and then put the racket down over it. Blow on it, the fly that is, and it will fly up into the mesh, and fizzzz! Very satisfying, and sometimes you even get tiny sparks. However, bigger flies, like bluebottles, don't always succumb immediately. They just get stunned, and if you don't squash them straight away, they'll recover and fly off.

As they say, time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana (and t*ts like coconuts)

I recall doing an 'O' or 'A' level exam at school, and when I double-checked the question, a decimal point had crawled a few places further along...

I've tried to delete a comma before now that subsequently walked away ...
