Fibre glass garage door treatment?

It's worn, faded and a dull ivory colour but I'm loathe to paint it for several reasons. Are there any good rejuvenation methods for fibre glass. I'm considering the possibility of going over it with cutting compound and then waxing it. Might I be on the right track here?

The best solution is to put on some protective gear, including facemask, have at it with a flapwheel in an anglegrinder, or something suitably abrasive to get rid of all the nasty stuff on the surface, then follow up by a layer of new fiberglass gelcoat. This will be what the original colour is.

This may be the best method but I'm still hoping for a more subtle and minimalist approach to be suggested.

Use the power of positive imagery to imagine that it's in beautiful original condition? Really dark sunglasses?

More or less - if you Google for fibreglass boat renovation/cleaning you will find plenty of ideas and a read of "Boats R Us" or whatever in WH Smith will get you uk suppliers of specialist renovation materials.

"Peek" metal polish was always popular as was Starbrite Marine polish. Normal Multisurface cleaner is also effective. Avoid the coarser abrasives such is Cif or kitchen abrasive cleaners - they work very well but abrade the surface which then attracts a lot more dirt quickly.

You cannot simply slap on more gelcoat - apart from anything else gelcoat only sets properly when deprived of air - when it is between a mould and the fibreglass. The results of trying to paint it on would not be out of place in Draculas Castle. On the other hand if that's the effect you want...

It's always been a source of some sadness for me, that I'm distinctly lacking in that department. This is very likely why I'm still practicing d-i-y rather than paying someone else to do the work while I try to imagine more rewarding and enjoyable things to do.

Or perhaps for a more permenant effect, not dependent on me remembering my shades, I could cover the door with a large, head and shoulders of Ray Charles poster.

Thanks, This is the one I'll go for. Being quite a susceptible chap, the danger is that exposure to "Boats R Us" might easily have me doing the job dressed in yachting cap and trews.

I'll keep that in mind.

Wish you'd mentioned this earlier, then I could've remodelled the whole place to match.;)
