Well it was bought from screwfix as a 3 1/2 inch immersion heater spanner.. That is its sole purpose as far as I know..

Cheap as chips,, you could get two or three..

Trouble is,, it is just cold stamped out of a thin round tube..

All the molecules and what nots are just screamin to get back to there old round shape..

The application of weld in this instance is shamefully rough, If I had in mind its future as a celeb spanner, no doubt the grooming would have been more careful..

To my way of thinking the application of weld around the edges (however tatty) serves a dual purpose..

The heat relaxes the tube into the new cold stamped shape =3D more strength.. The weld shrinks around the dia of the tube and tightens what was originally a loose fit stamping.. and the extra metal adds a firmer grip.. Note,, too much weld could easily have pulled it in too tight,, hence the patchy nature of the welds.. The idea was to put a short run on each flat..

I could not have done the job without it and as there are eight flat sides on the immerser,, the available options are few,, large stilsons can sometimes be used and professionals might have a cast iron tool for the job..

It worked very well.. It was all about getting to grips with a stubborn old emmersion heater in an awkward spot..
