FAO Fred, was Gas Fire Connection

I met a tame plumber in Grahams yesterday who told me the reason I couldn't find the correct washer for my gas fire connection was because it shouldn't have one! The reason being, if it crumbled, as the original one did, it could leak.

It transpires that the restrictor pipe had an incorrect fitting on the end of it, an iron elbow, which was why the female nut on the fire wouldn't tighten up onto it without a washer. He told me "I shouldn't say this but.....use an 8mm compression elbow instead".

Now sorted :)

I'm afraid we were talking at cross purposes then, I thought you were talking about the washer under the cap (with screwdriver slot) on top of the gas pedestal (the bit coming through the floor) which is the only place you should find a washer ;-).

I thought the thread on the end of the gas rod (restrictor pipe) was a taper so that it would mate and seal with the threaded fitting on the fire with gas rated ptfe tape but it is a while since I've done a fire.
