Extractor hood / coal fire

Hi all,

We have an open-plan room created from the kitchen, living room and dining room (basically most of the ground floor) in which we have an open fire. I'd like to install an extractor hood, but I've read somewhere recently that I can only use a recirculating one in a room with a fossil fuel fire - can anyone confirm or deny this? A proper extractor would be nicer of course (even though I'm going to have to bugger about ducting it to the outside, as the cooker can't be on an external wall).

TIA

The problem would be that the extractor would suck air down the chimney ...... nasty.

In out loo, the extractor sucks the door closed ........

The room is quite large - and the kitchen is the other end of the room to the coal fire, and round a corner (it's in the small bit of the 'L'). I'm wondering if it will make a huge amount of difference. I'm inclined to get a dual-mode extractor and try, but I was mainly wondering if there any regulations that I might be breaking...
