The currency symbols that are quoted from the original message have now become pairs of hooks '¬' and a-circumflexes 'â', so I suspect it's now been converted to UTF8 at some point, but it still doesn't have any headers to indicate that.
I think the problem originally arose because Macs (along with anything else using character sets derived from Latin1) used 0xA4 as the universal currency symbol '¤', then along came the euro '?' and Apple squeezed it in as 0xA4 instead.
