The utility is a sink at the end of the garage, and on the original plans, the meter and consumer unit are located under the stairs in the house (CIMG0646.JPG). On moving in, I have found the consumer unit where it should be, with a set of tails going through the wall into the garage, and into the isolating switch.
My concerns are that the utility room is where I would fill a bucket of water to wash windows, and with the door to the kitchen, I would have to walk past the main fuse. I assume that these isolators etc are not IP rated to a sufficient standard? The meter itself is a health hazard, twice I have hit my elbow of it, and it is damn sore. We have kids and this meter is right at head height. Also, I feel the standard of finish, the kids will swing from the cables attached that aren't secured. I can also touch the sink and the electrics very easily, without a stretch. I have been told that the isolator should be fitted next to the consumer unit, as if it goes on fire, you should be able to isolate the electrics easily. The reason I say this is because the garage door has a chubb lock and also two security locks on it. Is this correct? I can't even box anything in as the door to the kitchen clears the meter by 18mm - not much to play with!
I want the meter moved to the location on the plan, is there any safety aspect from the regulations that I can quote in my future arguments?
Thanks
Michael
