Electricity pricing

When looking at British gas's electricity tariff on economy 7

it states as follows

Unit Rate 1 15.2187 for the first 900kwh

Unit Rate 2 10.8381

Economy 7 Rate 2.2502

Does the first 900kw apply to all times of the day, in other words is the first 900kw charged at 15.21 across the board including night time units?

No, they wouldn't be able to do that as the meter has only two readings, one for day, and one for night, so they can't possibly know where the first

900kwh were used.

The first "day" 900kwh are charged at 15.2187 which is effectively a standing charge of £39.43

How do you reach tht figure, I make it =A3136.97 for the first 900kw used in any quarter.

15.2187 - 10.8381 = 4.3806 (This is the difference in price, so the additional price you are paying per unit for the first 900 units.) 4.3806 x 900 = 3942.54(p)

So you are paying an *additonal* £39.43 on the fist 900kwh on top of the normal rate.

im with you, works out pretty much the same in total

The 900kwh rate is probably per year. They probably take about 225kwh on each quarterly bill at the higher rate to balance your bill through the year. The economy 7 is a completely separate item I'm charged as a business user by EDF at 12.05 and 5.22 which is a lot cheaper than yours - perhaps you should shop around.

Is that 12.05p for the first 900kwh per annum and then 5.22p thereafter? If so, that looks very cheap - where are you based? Does yours include all taxes?

how? British gas are

Unit Rate 2 10.8381 Economy 7 Rate 2.2502

that looks lower than EDF

Are there any comparison sites that break it down into a simple table with all the suppliers, rate 1, rate 1 max units, rate 2, e7?

To make 'what if' analysis simpler.

It may be worth (if you haven't already done so) feeding your details into here

it asks you "Step 2: Choose what matters to you" make sure you tick "Search all plans" and "Include Social tariffs" Selecting Fixed Monthly Direct Debit seems to attract the most discounts too.

Make sure you also select NO to "Plans you can switch to online with uSwitch.com" then it will show you everything.

None of their residential tariffs show this price, even before VAT!

don't appear to give business rates online, I expect it depends on the amount you use.

What sort of consumption does your business use - are you running an ice-rink to get prices that low!?

The residential tariff I posted lists all their prices for the whole country!

Here it is, if the link isn't working for anyone...

I think so as well.

All in Norweb region:

Equipower E7 11.68 day, 3.79 night (+ VAT @ 5% = 12.26/3.98)

Equipower standard 9.81 (10.3)

Scottish Power Online standing charge 7.191 (7.55)

The Equipower tarrifs have no standing charge not even a "hidden" one, very good for low users.

Correct. As has been said it also varies by the pre-privatisation electricity board area one is in.

The last time I checked Scottish Hydro Electric was the cheapest for business users. From memory day units are around 7.5p and night units around 3.5p. However, one has to add on the standing charge, CCL and VAT to get the full picture.
