electrical supply to hob

Our electric induction hob will not power up. It is by Miele, usually a good make. It has power, it is not locked. Miele have been and tested it and say it is getting a maximum of 130 volts and I should call an electrician , which I will do. Anyone know why that may be in the absence of any other problems in the house ?. Wiring is about 5 years old and we had a new board , which has not tripped at that time.

Sound like a high resistance joint somewhere in the feed circuit

Or no connection, just someone not very experienced seeing induced voltage on a DVM. Could be on the live or the neutral. Probably just a single isolated fault.

What *I* would do is disconnect the power supply leads at the appliance and, after checking that live and neutral aren't swapped, check the neutral for continuity with another neutral, and measure the voltage on the live while applying some load, e.g. from a 60 watt bulb. NOT RECOMMENDED UNLESS you are comfortable working with "mains".

Actually I have one of those three-light "plug testers", but modified by wiring up three leads with insulated croc clips, to let me check for several faults in one go. Very useful for locating a "missing neutral" in lighting at daughters house which, initially, their electrician didn't spot.

But if he metered it with the hob turned off it would read full mains voltage. Sounds like he didn't know his job.

Temporarily connect it to another circuit known to be OK and see if it works. Eg a bit of flex and a plug to a 13a socket. Only try one hotplate at a time so you don't overload it.

This 130 volts sounds weird. Probably the fellow was using a digital meter which can give spurious readings if not used with caution. There are lots of half wit electricians about these days.

There is likely a faulty switch or loose connection somewhere.
