Drilling outside wall for electric cable

I need to run a cable from an inside socket to an outside weatherproof box, what's the recommended way to drill the hole? Drill from outside (brick) to inside (plaster) or the other way? (I'm assuming outside to in, so I can hit the middle of the brick) And are there any other considerations like whether the outside bit of cable should be run upwards or downwards? It's a standard wall, no pipes or existing cables in the way.

With a drill, preferably an SDS.

Depends how critcal the inside position is, generally that is more important so in to out.

Think anout where water will flow. The hole ought to slope slightly upwards out to in. The cable should enter the hole from below if it's coming from above take it past the hole a few inches to the side and form a loop to bring the cable back up to the hole, forming a "drip loop".

What is a "standard wall", ours was "standard" when it was built a couple fo hundred years ago, solid rough stone and lime mortar. My parent 1930's semi was "standard" for then, 9" solid brick. Todays standard is a cavity wall of some sort.

Indeed, I'd usually go from outside in. If you take a lump out of the plaster, its easily filled; take a lump out of the bricks and its not.

If you measure the width of the wall, you can very carefully drill nearly all the way through and leave the drill sticking out of the wall whilst you go round the other side and find the end of the bit with a metal detector. Then you can finish the hole from the other side.

A technique I discovered when the longest bit I had wasn't quite long enough...

Colin.

Silicone fails, gravity doesn't. B-)

Though some form of seal is still required due to wind.

If you know you are getting close to being through just stop pushing so hard and drill the last inch or two slowly. Minimal risk of a huge spall, you only get that when blasting through flat out with an SDS.
