Door Styles

Has anyone seen a resource that could help in choosing the correct type or style of door to go with a particular age of house? I just can't find anything in the online catalogues that looks right for the front of my house. Scottish, plain fronted, 18th century. By the look of the top lintel it had a split door, two thirds, one third. I've had a look in local salvage places without much luck.

Get hold of "Period House Fixtures and Fittings" by Linda Hall. She is the expert on this sort of thing and there is a chapter in the book on doors. The only gotcha is that the book covers England not Scotland so you might also look at "The Elements of Style" by Stephen Calloway which covers architectural detail throughout the Empire

I'm assuming a large door opening, maybe 3 times normal. One half of the door is for people, the other is only opened for bringing in bulky things, or if you're airing the place out.

Bound to be a local historian or history society who would know what the original looked like. Library is the place to start I reckon. They would probably know how to get in touch.
