I was looking for patination oil in Wickes, and on the linseed oil can it said "do not use on lead" or some such thing. Anyone know what patination oil is, and what it actually does chemically ? Simon.
The wickes data sheet says of patination oil: contents: White spirit CAS:64742-82-1 (this is white spirit type 1) Xn; F; N
No idea what the last bit means. But apart from this it is just white spirit.
You can also get lead-cote, a non-solvent based alternative from Jewsons. I'm off to get some tomorrow. Its in a spray bottle.
Simon.
These substances form a semi-permeable membrane on the lead that slowly allow the atmospheric gases and moisture etc through, stopping the white carbonate until the dull grey patina has build up. They wear away over time. Anything you can think of that does this, would work. Simon.
go to any roofing supplies and they will stock patination oil. I have no idea what is in it though.
