I used to need to measure the width of a river to work out if I could turn my narrowboat or not. I found that the focus ring on decent quality SLR (telephoto lens) gave an accurate enough result for that purpose.

Meh. Not going to get much oil out of deformed bone, might from thick hard skin.

Our orienteering-club cartographer bought a cheapish one (The Bushnell

450) to help produce 1:10000 forest maps.

He tells me it's excellent - at least as accurate as a 100m surveyor's tape or wheel - *PROVIDED* what you're aiming at is reasonably flat and reflective, which trees aren't.

"Accurate" for our needs is 1-2%.
