The inside of the dishwasher gets dirty very slowly over time. For this reason, you do not necessarily see the build up of crud.
You'll probably be surprised if you did give it a clean.

The tablets are a frequent purchase item and the market is relatively competitive. Ergo, the manufacturers price relatively keenly.
The cleaner is an occasional purchase, smaller volume product and probably an impulse buy. It is at a price point that doesn't frighten so may people that they are not prepared to buy.
Within those parameters, it probably doesn't matter if it costs £2.99, £3.99 or £4.99
