delivery through upvc window

Hello there, Apologies this isn't quite DIY - I'm hoping to take delivery of a large sofa that will only fit through the lounge window. Is anyone aware of a company that will temporarily remove a UPVC double glazed window and replace it on the delivery date? Is this advisable? Based in the North London area. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Simon

Any glazier will do the job but really its not as hard as you might think.

Four upvc strips going around the glass are easily prised off with a sharp blade and then the glass can be taken out and put back in place, tapping the four strips in with a hammer and a piece of wood that will take the tapping of the strips.

I'm going to have to do this in the near future as I have a wingback settee that I need to dispose of,it will not go through the door.

You'll have to ring around local glazing firms and see if anyone is willing to take it on, although I doubt any of them will, unless you are prepared to pay a days wages for someone, which down your end will be about £200+.

Thanks guys - there is a black rubber looking beading on the inside, however it's double glazed. Once I get off the inside pane is the outside one easily removable in a similar way?

The rubber is the sealant that keeps both panes together ie it comes out as one unit inside.

Do you mean just the glass or the entire window frame?

A chainsaw would help if you do not intend selling or giving the settee away.

I recently removed a lounge window double glazed unit using a butter knife on the internal beading and the help of someone to help me lift the glass out. It took longer to get the beading back in than removing it.

It really is as easy as George says it is and I had never done it before.

Funnily enough the council won't take it in bits&pieces they say wood is not recyclable. Found this out when I had a foldable double bed and worktops to get rid of,they said they will take the bed but wont take the worktops.

You must have been pooping in your pants putting the beading back? :-)

Phone a local removals company and chat up the receptionist. Maybe she may know a firm they use when their boys get stuck.

Not at all. Once the first piece of beading is in you can stick the kettle on before doing the rest of them. Now getting the last piece of beading in cause me a lot of grief. But it all went back in the end.

What do the council do with a broken settee that they will not do with a broken one?

Have you thought about burning it after chainsawing it?

The trick is... to fit one of the smaller sections first then one of the longer strips, then the other smaller strip and then you can bend the last longer strip ie fit the two corners into the ends and hammmer it into place at the middle this will then push the edges flush with the corners. ;-)

I did have a go when I decided the settee had to go through the window somtime.

Never query the way the council work,it gives you headaches. :-)

Smoke free zone.

Neighbour had a settee removed from their attic by a specialist sofa/bed dismantling firm. The settee had been installed via a Veluz window in the attic and said neighbour did not want to repeat the experience. The specialist took the sofa to pieces to the extent that it could be manoevered down a tight spiral staircase and then re-assembled it. If you hadn't seem it done you would not have believed it etc etc.

Wouldn't it be easier to cut into into smaller bits? More fun as well with a big 'ammer. B-)

Do you remember play school?

This was the square window. All lengths equal.

I probably was too careful in knocking the beading back in and took my time instead of just giving it a bloodly good thump. First time trying it.

No because then the council will not take it away and I would have to arrange its removal.. I did phone the up and said...If I chop up a 3 piece suite would you collect it...they said no but will take it as a 3 piece suite.

Pretty sure that doesn't stop you having an occasional bonfire, only from burning wood or non smokeless coal in your stove or fireplace. I bet there are plenty of BBQs about if the weather is ever nice enough...
