Covering old artex

I need advice on how to coat over an artex pattern on a ceiling.

I've seen a TV programme where they use "coating powder". Is this what it's called in the shops and does anyone know where I can get some?

TIA

What are you trying to achieve? Do you simply want to paint it, or do you want a flat surface where you currently have a textured surface?

If the former, apply emulsion paint with a roller on an extension handle.

If the latter, seal it with a PVA solution, and re-skim it with finishing plaster - both obtainable from builders merchants.

I want to get rid of the artex pattern to leave a smooth surface. Is finishing plaster the right thing to use or is there a specialist powder for the job?

When I had an extension built a couple of years ago, a room with an Artex ceiling was extended - and I wanted the whole ceiling smooth. As far as I know, after treating it with PVA, the plasterers used exactly the same plaster on the old bit as on the new bit.

[They used whatever one used to skim plasterboard - I'm not sure whether it's the same as finishing plaster or not - but a builder's merchant will advise you].
