No, quite a lot is a couple of hundred tonnes.

builders merchant who will deliver.

My local builders merchant will deliver a ton bag of Cotswold chippings for about £50. that will do a layer about 50 mm deep. Other gravels cost different amounts, some are four times that price. Avoid lime stone as it turns to mud if you move it about frequently.

'Coverage rates for gravels are typically 15-20 m² per tonne at 35mm thick'.

IME the biggest mistake you can make is to have too thin a layer.

Others have answered that point, but make sure you add a landscaping type membrane down or you will get grass and weeds. It will look a mess!

you will get them quicker with the membrane actually.

Its a total con.

why?

because the weeds come from on top, via wind blown seeds. Along with mud off the car wheels

All the mat does is stop them falling through the gravel to where the sun don't shine, and the seeds wont germinate..

Bzzzzt! I have a piece of land that continually grew weeds - big 'uns. Before last spring, I laid down 100m2 of membrane and covered that with 8 tonnes of gravel. (which gave a depth of 8-10 cm.) Since then there have been a *few* tufts of grass that have seeded as you describe - all easily pulled out, since their roots were only in the gravel and therefore very loose. Nothing has penetrated through the membrane - even though in past years the weeds would be up a couple of feet by now.

well I did exactly as you did, but with no membrane, and with identical results. Windblown seeds only.

Gravel stops light, light stops growth. the membrane is an expoensive waste pof time.

Exactly my experience. I notice the odd weed, presumably from birds droppings, and think 'I must spray that'. When I remember a week later its invariably dead any way. No nutrient available.

And weed control fabric doesn't have to be dear. I use this stuff under decks
