costs for man and van

actually van and two men.

what do you pay?

The hourly quote that I've just got is a lot more than when I moved in.

I'm only going 15 miles, so the running costs of the van will be minimal, but I know that the loading and unloading are awkward and will take up to twice the estimated time (based upon him not knowing the actual address).

I'm in the SE, outside the M25 in an area where there isn't a "posh" remium - I know all about that, sis lives in one of those places :-)

60 quid for one man, luton van with tail lift, 7 miles, and 50 boxes of books and phones (and a sideboard) to be humped down/up 4 flights of stairs.

M+V was booked for 4 hours but actually took less time.

There must be a market for a van and two women.

So was £60 the 4 hour price?

Feels low to me, given that straight rental of a Luton-with-taillift is £75/day.

in Saudi probably ;>)

Does this give an easy sum?

Van £75

Unskilled labour (if you can find it) £80 a day *2 = £160.

Quick cost £235.

So if you guestimate £250 - £300 I Imagine that this is not expensive for a one off move and much cheaper than using a removal firm.

That's about what I paid when I moved here from 100 miles away (so a 4 hour round trip as well as the loading/unloading)

this new guy wants much the same for a 1 hour round trip of 15 miles each way, plus loading

Dunno, the "real" removal firm have yet to reply to my query ;-(

I paid a local removal firm £320 + VAT for two men and a van to move my office furniture a few miles last November.

£60 was the price for the 4 hours.

I looked at van rental but it actually turned out cheaper to hire the man w ho brought his own van (and did the heavy lifting) and was presumably insur ed for goods in transit.

I've also discovered that

or perhaps not :-(

My own home contents insurance covers my stuff in transit whilst in self- rented-loaded-driven Transit. I doubt it would do so whilst in the care of (generic) Man & Van.

Try anyvan.com or shiply.com, or homeship.co.uk

The first two will post your requirements to their participating "Men with ven", and they then indulge in a dutch auction till you or they give up.

I had four big tyres collected from Preston, and delivered to me near Derby, for little more than it would have cost me to drive there in my car.

Rental is no guide to charge if man already owns van.

you are effectively renting the van off the man who owns it

Seems reasonable that you should pay for that tim

I haven't filled them in to see what happens, but none of them seem targeted at whole house moves

That'll be because someone was making the journey anyway and had space on their van. - and you were presumably flexible about delivery time.

I'm not in that market, I'm going to want sole use of the van and I need to travel with the guy to the far address to let him in

Rental cost is an excellent guide to both the cost of owning/maintaining the van and to the potential income from owning the van without supplying labour.

You may find either a removal firm with a gap in their bookings, or perhaps one from another part of the country who may be unloading in your area in the morning and could fit in your job before returning to base. Not much lost by enquiring - it may find a firm you hadn't thought of asking to quote. You may need to make it clear if you really need to travel with the van, as against following on your bike or pogo stick.

Of course, but he will probably not charge as much as hiring directly from a van rental company. He will write off the cost over a much longer period.
