Cost of Plumber replacing 6 radiators

Hi Could someone let me know if how much replacing the following radiators should be for a plumber in South London. I do have a quote from the company who put in my boiler which I am very happy with and they quoted just under =A31000 and they said they would throw in a boiler service with this. Does this sound reasonable or should I get some more quotes?

They did replace one radiator when installing the boiler just under 2 years ago and this cost =A3100 extra in addition to the boiler cost. I therefore thought that it would be more like =A3700 for the 6 radiators below but apparently this was done at a reduced rate as they were doing the boiler at the time.

Just want some indication as to what other people think about the cost. It is too big a job to do ourselves but need to get the most cost effective option when getting someone in to do it.

The single radiators do have a zig zag metal strip all along the back and = >the double also has a zig zag between the two radiator panels.

Any advice will be gratefully received. Kind Regards Victoria

Total cost of the rads is well under £200 online from Screwfix or similar. Singles are as little as £20 each and doubles, well about double that, no shit eh? Even if you factor in some new valves and a full day's labour which it won't require if you're just replacing like for like it's a decent job at

400/450 squids. Any half arsed competent handyman could do it in a morning. You don't really need a plumber for no-brainer work like this and certainly not at a grand.

That's entirely up to you, the price you pay will be the quote you accept. Since you have not mentioned the model of radiator offered or the model of TRVs offered it's impossible to answer accurately. If you can'/won't DIY then to have a quote from someone you are happy with is a result of sorts.

My recommendation would have been to have requested several quotes at the same time and see how many came through. Price is only one issue, the price difference is likely to be least important issue.

double also has a zig zag between the two radiator panels.

What are we looking at here:

Drain down, remove (and dispose of) old radiators, attach new ones to wall. Make pipework fit. Refill, with inhibitor, bleed, clear up.

A solid days work in my estimation. The radiators will be about £300-600 but could be more if you have design types.

Why is this work needed?

£1000 seems to much unless there are special reasons.

This bloody handyman wouldn't do it in a morning! Easily a days work assuming everything fits and nothing leaks.

That may be the case for low end junk. Decent radiators cost a little more.

That is something of an underestimation.

- The system will need to be drained and possibly cleaned. At least it should be flushed.

- The radiator valves should be replaced. Reasonable thermostatic ones such as TRV4s are about £20 each

- The new radiators may well not be precisely the same length as the old, requiring an adjustment to the pipework. This can be fiddly.

- The system will need to refilled, tested for leaks, bled and finally have corrosion inhibitor added.

There is certainly more work there than can be accomplished properly in a morning, and cost more than £4-500 for a proper job.

Dispose of isn't a problem round here. You'd have to tie yourself to them once they're outside to stop them getting into the back of a battered old van.

Light iron (radiators) is only just self-propelled. However last Tuesday the scum bags smashed my pipe carrier in broad daylight and removed the copper (a few length s of 15, 22 and 28).

How does this happen? It's not as though walking back to Whitley after dark with some lengths of 3m copper isn't a bit obvious.

Then I wonder about the size of the haul.

BES price for 15mm copper in 3m lengths is about £5 a pop. I would think that this amounts to the most metal when several lengths are put into a piece of 100mm tube. How many fit? 20 perhaps? £100 for the whole exercise. Seems hardly worth it.

I'm sure that these batards had a vehicle. They clearly smashed the locked (110mm pipe derived carrier) and took the Cu.

I think the copper pipe fetches about 1/3 of the sale price. That means that a moderate haul form a pipe carrier is worth about £10-£20.

Indeed so. My whole approach has now changed. * keep a few shortened lengths in the van for 'emergency' work. * size up bigger jobs and buy as needed then take the pipe straight into the house before anything else.

What got me was that this was 11am in a medium posh area with plenty of people looking on, and the possibility that I or my apprentice might easily have caught them red handed. How f***ing more audacious can they get.

Yup. I wouldn't get out of bed for that, far less risk a run-in with plod or dental remodelling by irate former owner of property for that little reward. Evidently those that do are prepared to fill niches lower down in the food chain.

And I don't suppose anyone was walking back to Whitley with the stuff. There were a couple of dustbins full of scraps that went (bins and all), so definitely someone with a vehicle, so add the running cost of that (even without bothering with tax & insurance!).

Thieves will do £200/worth of damage to your car for 50p's worth of parking meter change on the dash.
