A piece of land near to me was sold some months ago - is there any way of finding out how much it went for? Do the land registry people have such details, or do they simply store who owns the land?

They may well know how much the land went for but I doubt if they would tell you. That deal is private btween the previous owner and the new one. It would be the same if you sold your house, you or the purchaser may want to kep itt private for numerous reasons so the land registry should not divulge it if they do know that

Now i was once told that the sale of property was in fact the sale of a piece of land which just happened to have a house thereon. It was the sale of the land which the land registry were interested in, not the actual house or whatever.
Look it up online, you can even download a report, PDF format, just have your credit card handy, about 2 quid IIRC....
different in scotland I believe
different in england as well mate, price paid for a house is definitely available.

The price paid IS now available on the Land Registry Online site. It costs £2 for a copy of the entry. This has only been the case for a couple of years. Eralier registrations don't give the price. Go back about twenty years and the values were given for a while.

This is not the case. You can get an online copy of the registration and if registered since 1 April 2000 it will include the price paid.

The Land Registry does both.
The register for the land is divided into 3 sections:
A. Property register, stating the property and beneficial rights, etc;
B Proprietorship register, stating the proprietor of the land (usually the owner) and address, the price stated to have been paid or value stated of the land, personal covenants and other matters relating to the proprietor; and
C Charges register stating restrictive covenants, subjective easements (rights), mortgages etc.
Over the internet you will need the address and the fee for a copy of the register is £2. Not much good if you are looking for a field.
Postal applicaitons cost £4 for the register and £4 for the title plan which shows the legal extent of the land. You will need to send in a sketch plan showing where the land is in relation to a road, road junction, house etc.
Registration is complusory on a sale, assent, mortgage etc throughout England and Wales.
Hope this helps.
Bobby
If you pay for a title search with Land Registry it will show current owner if registered, and all new transactions are registered ... and will show the purchase prices ... or at least the price they declared it changed hands for.
