Cooker wiring

What are the regulations as regards the depth of a cable connecting a cooker switch to the outlet plate behind the cooker?

As the cabling will run behind the kitchen units does it still have to be either 50mm below the surface or in the horizontal/vertical plane from the switch?

I ask as the switch above the work surface has to be 30cm either side of the cooker but a vertical run would leave the outlet plate behind a kitchen unit making it an awkward job if the cooker was ever replaced.

If I run the cable down from the switch and then horizontally to the outlet plate (i.e. in a 'L' shape) is this OK?

Cheers

Martin Carroll coughed up some electrons that declared:

Hi Martin,

Same as any other cable - the IEE Regs make no special distinction between between cooker and any other LV circuit in this respect.

Yes. Or mechanically protected (steel conduit, SWA, MICC/pyro).

No - Take the cable horizontally from the switch, round a 90 degree bend then down vertically to the cable outlet which is offset to be behind the cooker.

The cable is ether in the band created by the switch or it's in the band created by the cable outlet - both validly create a band to conceal cables in.

Similar to above - absolutely fine.

Thanks Tim

Thought that might be the case.

Only problem I suppose is bending the 10mm2 supply cable 8-(
