Continuity checking alarm cable

Can I make sure that my understanding is correct. In my house alarm cable is fitted but there is no controller. Some windows have tremblers fitted. I have been doing some diy and put in some extra cable with the idea of re-installing the alarm system at a later date. Am I right in thinking that I must get continuity on the tamper circuit and the trembler switch circuit. If I don't then there must be a connection fault somewhere or a broken or unconnected cable somewhere in the circuit?

Yes, unless they are wired as EOL, (where you will get a higher resistance than a dead short), or with ID biscuits (similar to EOL, in that the tamper and alarm are on two wires, however, if you have the vibration sensor connected up, it may not show continuity unless the unit is powered up, assuming it also would usually have a +12v supply.

if you want to test the wires, then it is best to short them out at one end, then test the other end.
