One option might be to dig to full depth over most of the floor, but dig progresievly shallower at the edges, so the cone shape of soil under the walls is not disturbed. Then you get agood load of insulatino in without destabilising the walls.

Understand I'm only talking generalities here, not advising you to do anything.

1" of insulation makes a big difference. Cavity wall insulation is only normally 2", and 1" has over half the effect of 2".
