Cold radiator

I have one large, cold radiator - those in all the other rooms are working fine. I tried to bleed it today, and got a spurt of hot water. Nedless to say, it's still cold.

Can someone help?

It probably isn't getting any flow because your system needs balancing properly. I'm sure if you ask Google there'll be plenty of websites that explain how to do that.

"Why," said Ford squatting down beside him and shivering, "are you lying face down in the dust?" "It's a very effective way of being wretched," said Marvin.

You may have an air lock in either the flow and return pipe. If you bleed it with both valves open, you will get a spurt of hot water as long as at least one pipe is working - but no flow thereafter unless they are *both* working.

You may be able to get it working by turning off all the other rads - and it may continue to work when you turn them on again.

If that doesn't work, you need to bleed each pipe separately. So close one valve and bleed the rad until you get a decent flow of water. Bleed about a litre out (taking care to catch it rather than pouring it on the floor!). Then open that valve and close the other one and repeat the procedure. Finally open both valves.

[If you have a vented system, put the water which you caught back into the F&E tank. If it's a sealed system, keep the pressure topped up by using the filling loop]

Even when you get it working, you will probably have to balance the system - by restricting the flow to the hottest radiators in order to generate more 'urge' to this one - in order to get it decently hot.
