Cleaning Potterton Kingfisher II Boiler

Our 20 year old Potterton Kingfisher II boiler had become very smoky, leaving a soot stain on the outside wall and doubtless producing carbon monoxide. The flue hood was very difficult to remove as the sealant for the fibreglass rope gasket was applied too liberally and it was stuck to the backplate. Therefore not a single CORGI registered gas =93engineer=94 had ever removed it in 20 years! Once the combustion chamber cover and burner are removed as well, access is gained to the top and bottom of the cast iron heat exchanger. A long length of wire can then be held at both ends and the two flue passage slits can be cleared =96 a very sooty job so a dust mask is essential. A thin pipe cleaner, a brush and tapping with a rubber mallet will remove even more soot. After a good vac it should work like new.

And you *will* do a spillage test before you put it back into service, won't you?
