Choosing white goods when everything looks the same

Washing machines: Bosch are of respectable longevity and only a bit more money than junk brands Fridge freezer: stay away from frost free freezers, theyre far less reliable. Brand doesnt seem to matter too much. Dryer:

like Adam said, get used ones at 1/5th the price if you know how to fix minor faults.

I knew there was something missing from my student days. I thought it was vitamins, but it was disposable pants.

Its a small spot so he should be able to get over it easily.

I think that's why bob said the ribbon needed to be ribbed but I don't know how bob knew.

You really have to qualify which Bosch subtype...

Logixx are the only one worthy IMO of the Bosch name.

Clasixx, Excell are s**te crap made in another country and do Bosch no favours. It's not even like green vs blue for power tools, where the green is at least pretty decent if you don't use it everyday...

Well yes, I'd agree about brand names. All the fridge innards seem to be made in Italy, though some are now chinese, however, I do think that there are some cases where you get what you pay for. I quite like most of Panasonics washing machines for instance, but then again, a friend bought a very cheap one which sounds like a bucket of bolts but does the job.

I would never buy a mon auto defrost fridge freezer again. My first lasted

20 years and was an Hitachi, the second is a Fridgemaster, which is a bit of a bitsa brand, but has given no issues except that I fancy it is not quite as green and efficient as the current models.

Of course there seems to be a trend that white goods are no longer white, which I think is quite nice. As I said earlier I've had no issues with frost free fridges myself.

That's an interesting point (and thanks to everyone else who responded).

The fridge / freezer and dishwasher will be in the lounge / kitchen, so if they're too loud, they'll ruin Match of the Day. Any guidelines / statistics as to how this can be measured before purchase?

Not so, Miele are consistently better performing and more reliable than almost all others. I've had my Miele dishwasher 11 years and WM 9 years, not a single service callout to either, and both working as well as the day they arrived.

A lot of people could say that about their Hotpoints. It's how the ones

*bought today* perform that matters, although I admit that Miele are probably OK unless you ever need to buy spares.

Exactly. It has been about 10 years since I was last in the market, and when I looked at what was now on offer, I was shocked at how "samey" it all was.

Again rings a bell. I see the manufacturers *mainly* trying to differentiate on gimmicky "features" that will metaphorically gather dust (not be used).

Exactly. My (admittedly unscientific) browsing in shops didn't give me that warm fuzzy feeling about Miele, or anyone else, in terms of visible build quality / feel.

Some years ago when I was young and stupid (I am now middle aged and stupid) I scanned my knob using the display computer/scanner in Currys.

Sometimes sex in the kitchen is a mistake. Jalapeno peppers and sex do not mix. She was screaming when she ran to the shower.....

Try asking people who own Miele machines (quite a few on this newsgroup over the years for a start, including the venerable Andy Hall). I've never heard anyone with Miele machines say they wouldn't buy another, or wouldn't recommend it to someone else. And as for quality / feel, my WM weighs 90Kg, it feels rather better to me than the flimsy cheap ones do.

We have a Miele washing machine. Brilliant bit of kit.

How is it that doesn't surprise me?

The clever bit was that I knew how to make the scan become the screensaver. I set the screensaver to display about 1 minute after I had left the shop. It worked, my brother went back in to check. He is also an idiot.
