Cheap Worx 230mm angle grinder in Homebase

I was in Homebase yesterday when I noticed a Worx 230mm angle grinder for £24.99, reduced from £34.99, or so they said. When I got home I checked on the web, and found the same model in Argos for £49.99, with a 115mm model for £34.99. I could only find one reference to the Worx brand, and that was from a satisfied customer.

I thought I must have made a mistake, and went back this morning to check.

I was right, and I bought their last one for £24.99. Incidentally, their price for the 115mm one was £8 something.

Is this a really good offer or have they made a mistake?

It is not the label and price that sets a decent router appart from a poor one, its down to what it is like to use, and the quality of the finish...

It's probably just a stock clearance. My (very superficial) impression was that this and similar brands were being made and sold as one step up from the el-cheapo Power Devil etc and it may be that they have fallen between two stools: failing to attract the price is everything brigade, also failing to attract those who know what they want and who have price as a secondary consideration.

Argos can be quite pricey

I've just ordered a Bosch Ixo screwdriver from Amazon for 20 quid post free. In both Argos and Focus it's £34.99.

Hi Chris

They seem to be having a sale. I bought a Power Base 1100 watt router today for =A322.99. It's exactly the same (exactly) as the Black & Decker KW850EKA which sells for =A369.95.

Andy Hall wouldn't like either of them, too cheap and no designer labels............

well the Worx 710W drill comes with a little "Italian Design" label so no problem there. Unfortunately since it's currently reduced to £14.99 in Homebase anyone with money to burn would consider it demeaningly cheap but its makes a perfectly acceptable job of 8mm holes in my hardest brick. Good balance and speed control. Impressive VFM for routine work.

Fits. The quality of the work it does doesn't matters then.

Quality of finish OF THE WORK oh dimm one...

(although there is also a correlation to quality of finish on the work to that of the tool itself - properly finished struts, bearings, and slide mechanisms are absolutely required if you want anything approaching a decent cut)

I was excited about a cheap "B&D KW850EKA" as I already own one and would go for a second at that price so I don't have to reset depths as often.

I took a look at homebase one and its true it is the same basic design however the finishing is not nearly as good (sorry!) and it feels a bit heavier (which indicates to me that some of the materials must be different) which is why I did not buy it in the end.

Seems a good deal for the price though.

Alex.

Hi Alex

Only had a quick play, but it handles well and seems to have plenty of power.

Well pleased for =A323!

Great. If it does everything the B&D one does (& I expect it will) then you have got a bargain.

I recently bought as McKellar one from Focus for around 38 quid IIRC. Used it about ten times and wore down three disc's and already the bloody things packed up after a lot of arcing and very rapid brush wear:((
