Changing a BT Home Hub

I have one of the earlier BT Home Hubs, the white one, (can't find any = id on it but it is software release 6.2.6.H, software variant BP, = product code 36143610, Board name Bant-Z )

Recently it's been hanging. Stays up for a few hours then disconnects. = End result is my line is being ip profiled down to a painful speed. BT = phone line seems ok (I=E2=80=99ve reported a possible fault)

Now I have a brand new BT identical hub. Can I just swap them over or is = there internal information that the =E2=80=98far end=E2=80=99 needs to = match for it to work. I=E2=80=99d like to use it as an elimination = exercise.

Well it shouldn't be :) All sorts of things have gone skew whiff since the power cuts we've had :( (oh and thanks for your huge help)

(Message re-sent as apparently my original went out in mime format - loads of things have gone squiffy since the power cuts, I'm now 'enjoying' a 0.27 Mb download speed - usual 6 Mb :( ) Hopefully THIS message will be plain text :)

I only have a sample of one (when I talked someone through that change). Simply unplugging old and plugging in new worked for her (plus of course new wireless associations and new admin p/w). I advised that on the basis of no more than the reasoning that even BT would make the switch simple and robust givenm the zillions of home hubs they issue. But that may of course be a naive assumption so please don't come after me with a large garden gnome if you end up having to communicate by smoke signals :)

Connection did take a while to settle down though (as with a new one).

The original was fine here via aioe. Although it did include an HTML attachment. Some are obviously using newsreaders that can't cope.

Is it the hub that's hanging thought? i.e. can you still ping it, or browse its internal web page?

It might be factors outside of your equipment causing the disconnects. Sometimes its worth talking to the ISP to see what they are seeing from their end.

If they sent it to you, then you should be able to swap - they either send them preconfigured, or use a system that identifies the subscriber by their CLI rather than needing explicit authentication.

If you are using WiFi, the SSID and password may have changed (check the pull out plastic tab on the router)

This sort of issue often happens when some nice person attempts to send a message via email and news of course. Brian

If your speed is so dire, maybe you should just try it and see?

If his power cut was due to some lightening strikes or wires touching or flooded transformers, the line voltage on the phones could easily go over the prescribed levels and damaged the filters for broadband etc. It could even have mangled a phones isolation cap. I do know they protect these things in the master socket etc, but it might be worth testing the new hub on its own on the line if it still acts up and then at least you would know whos gear is faulty!

in the dial-up days, my modem died as a result of a thunderstorm in the vicinity

Swap them out, reconfigure your network for the different security = details with the new router. Switch on the router, wait until all lights appear, try connection.

The system will re-synch as required and detect the apparatus.

Question is.... If you are experiencing difficulties with the old hub = why haven=E2=80=99t you requested a replacement new type (Just phone = them and suggest it=E2=80=99s playing up and failing and would like a = free updated router)

My experience of swapping an original Home Hub for a newer model second hand Home Hub is that swapping them just works.
