Cavity Insulation

I've just got a quote from Miller Pattison (via British Gas) to do cavity wall insulation in a 3-bed chalet bungalow (where about 25-35% of it already has some because it's a new extension).

They have quoted £250 basically, plus £45 to fit a vent in the sitting room (required apparently because there is a fireplace). I think I am getting something fairly minor like £25 off from British Gas.

I'm sure I heard that a building like this could be done for something like £125 with the grants available. I know this varies from region to region, but does anyone have any general advice on how to find out if this is the best I can get, or does anyone in Wilts have any specific advice on grants?

By the way, does it seem odd to anyone else to go to all that trouble insulating a house and then punch a dirty great air vent in one room? He hinted that many people gaffer-tape them up when he's left.

If you or one of the other residents claims one of the following benefits:

Working Families Tax Credit; Disabled Persons Tax Credit; Attendance Allowance; Disabled Living Allowance; Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (which includes Constant Attendance Allowance); or War Disablement Pension (which must include the mobility supplement or Constant Attendance Allowance). or any benefit, coupled with a disablement benefit, you can get it done for free, that is to say, you are eligible for a £700 grant from Eaga....this will cover CWI for most houses, and in your case the loft too

The full details are here, that's old information in the last post, the grant has been increased to over £2000 now, see here:

benefits, it does imply that you may be in with a chance anyway so I'll give them a call.

I had my largish early 1900s two-storey 3 bedroom semi-detached done for £388, less a 40% grant of £150, so it cost me £188. It was priced on the surface area of cavity wall in square metres. Your local council will have details of the grants available in your area.

has useful information. I would get some more quotes, and wouldn't touch BG with a bargepole.

I have recently had my bungalow cavity wall and loft insulated free. I have none of those benefits. the reason my loft was free was because it had no insulation, if it had been top up I would have paid, strange but true. I understand that government subsidies paid for most, my gas & electric supplier paid the rest. I am a very happy bunny.
