Caustic soda - longevity?

I always think that when the DIY shows on TV reveal a 'trick of the trade' by telling the viewer that doors stripped in caustic should be neutralised by wiping over with vinegar. How much vinegar? How alkali was the door? Without some litmus paper its impossible!

Don't worry, I was clueless until I googled but Mr G's content is usually worth following up on and "Bicarbonate of Soda" +wiki filled in the details. That +wiki is finding its way into quite a few of my searches these days.

A deposit of sodium salts is almost as bad as the original alkali, given that they're all pretty hygroscopic. No substitute for whoever stripped it thoroughly washing it in the first place
