Building regs are the minimum standard not the target.

Unshielded CAT5 more than good enough.

WiFi 802.11.N is currently as good as it gets and is still unreliable in domestic premises.... you may have a 100MB router, but if you want to see how bad it is run a speed test at 15m away, performance drops incredibly ... especially if walls in the way.

802.11 N gives multiple frequency and antenna's to try and overcome signal blocking, but although signal gets through, throughput is dramatically affected.
