How many would I need for a 18' x 12' shed? Also where is the best place to order? Im trying to avoid Wickes and B & Q.

I'm not going to tell you how to calculate it - if you can't do that, you really shouldn't build a shed. Standard blocks are 18x9x4".

As far as where to order, phone around all your builders merchants, and get the best price. Last time I bought some standard thermalites they came out at 65p - that was from Travis Perkins.

There is a Calculator Resource link on

You will have to convert everything to metric.

Calculate your requirements as 3 walls and add extra to cover breakages.

No, standard blocks are 440 x 215 mm x a variety of thicknesses, of which

100 mm is the most common. That's the actual block size. Adding 10 mm to the width and height (for the mortar joints) gives 450 x 225 mm, which is called the 'module size'.

The area of one module is 0.45 * 0.225 m^2, which is equal, almost exactly, to 0.10 m^2. So the calculation is very easy - 10 blocks per square metre of wall area, plus an allowance for cutting and wastage.

The larger Durox blocks seem to be very commonly used now. These are 630 x

225 mm (module) which works out at a tad over 7 blocks per square metre.
