Cable labels

Anyone suggest a reasonable solution for labelling all the comms, power, ethernet, RF and so on cables under the desk(s) in my study? I've just sorted out the rats nest of wiring and I'd like not to have to do that again in a hurry.

I use a P-Touch labeller lengthways then cover with clear heatshrink. Of course this may not be possible on some leads depending on plug sizes.

I use a Brother label maker, at each end of every cable, wrapped like a flag, with the name on both sides. Makes it much easier to reconnect stuff after a major disruption. I also put labels on the plugs of all power cords.

I got the label maker at Costco a few years ago - it's been worth every penny!

What the others said about the Brother P-Touch... failing that, one of these is a quick and rough solution:

just write on the white bit of the tab, peel off the precut length of label and wrap it round the cable. The clear section at the end protects the written on bit so that it does not smudge.

You can get bags of Ty Wraps with flat areas on them for writing. A CD marker will do that permanently

Another vote for the P-touch here. I also use it to label all the wall-warts because every device seems to come with its own, incompatible with everything else, power supply yet they tend not to have the same name on the label as the device that they power.

I tie them in bundles at the back of each PC, so if you have to shift one all the cables for it stay together. The plastic covered wire that comes around new cables is useful this.

Wall warts I put a p-touch label on. Wall warts that are chargers also get the recommended charge time.

You could try spiral wrap if stuff is pretty much permenant installation or just releaseable cable ties at intervals to keep things in order. Maybe tied to small hook eyes screwed into the underside of the desk.

It's a super little tool for what it is. I wish there was still a wide range of tape colours available. Originally there were about a half dozen. Must admit I haven't checked recently.

It's a long time since I bought any. Mine uses TZ tapes and they were available in a huge range of foreground and background colours. I bought a couple of packs of all the colour combinations I wanted at the time I got the P-touch and still haven't run out of tape.

Here's what I use, in conjunction with a fine-tipped permanant marker pen:

GBP0.50. That's more like it. ;-)

I use the Pentel Paint Pen 0.5 in silver for labelling wall-warts 'cos, when dry, the ink doesn't wear off, peel off or do any of the other irritating things that sticky labels do. And it works on less than smooth surfaces, goes round existing labels and corners. It's also quicker to grab one of these pens than find my Casio Ez-Label Printer - and then remember how to create a label that fits in the available space.

I did use the labeller for sorting the rats nest of AV system cables, but even these labells eventually lost the will to live and peeled off despite being wrapped and then stuck back on themselves.

I also found that even CD pen faded on flagged tie wraps.

Just my two penny worth.

Richard ;-)

I've seen them in Staples in the US - perhaps they can be mail-ordered?

p-touch isn't carried by the stationary sheds in any great range, they all seem to favour the Dymo system. RS has quite a range and so do CPC.

What, a blank page? Print it out on Tyvek and tie it round the cable?

:o)

Ahh. I've been writing on white mains plugs with a CD pen, but it doesn't work for black ones. Or wall warts.

There are over 40 bloody things plugged in in this study. Grrrr.

Sorry, I died of exhaustion before I got to the end of that URL.

Still GBP20. I'll order the labels.
