proper cable cutter? What were the results like?
MBQ
might be ok if the jaws are 'hardened' but I wouldn't count on it
Nope, but they are wire fence cutters and recollection of wire fence is the same stuff of bicycle brake wire(wound stranded wire).
If they.re not up to the job I cant see a problem for changing to another type or money back.

I paid £27 for cable cutters about 15 years ago. Bicycle brake cable is
*very* hard and cable outers are a b*st**d to cut cleanly.Shell out for decent cable cutters now. They will last a lifetime and save you much swearing.
Alternatively, get a professional to cut your cables for you (and pay a bomb for his services...)
Anything else will guarantee burrs on cable outers, unravelling inner cables (which won't thread through the outer cables) and much swearing.
Trust me, I'm a doctor...
I bought the Halfords cutter, which is currently 18 quid
Can't imagine what a five pound cutter would be like!

I used to date a woman Dr,till I realised her name was Valarie Dempston. :-O
Thought not.
You are "Big Wallop" and I claim my =A35

Your crystall ball is clouded or you have a short memory?
I was around when BW was. :-)
I agree with Helen, braided steel cables are a b****** to cut. Cheap cutters chop a few of the strands then manage to squeeze the rest down between the sides of the cutting jaws. You could take your own little bit of cable along and try the Halfords ones in store - though even that doesn't tell you how well they will do on the 100th cable. Have my doubts about the Machine Mart ones as they're probably meant for solid wire.
I can cut =A35s with scissors :=3D))

I can. The bog mindles.
The message from "The3rd Earl Of Derby" contains these words:
Most of the fencing wire I've seen has been single strand steel.
Yep, I use CK Piano wire cutters, i've had the same ones in my toolbox since I was an apprentice (counts ... 24 years ago)
Thy aren't abused, as I have a big pair of CK sidecutters for cutting Split pins, etc.
Very good quality.
Paul.
I tend to use the edge of the bench grinder to do it. Soldering nipples on is an art...

Personally, I would not use an angle grinder to cut a cable.
Is this uk.d-i-y or uk.bodge-it-yerself?
The message from Chris Bacon contains these words:
Thermoplastic surgery?
I don't know, but I wouldn't use an angle grinder, either - and if you read again, I didn't say I would.
Hmm...
Great fun. Made up a replacement throttle cable for the SD1 using probably expensive bits from Halfords for less than a third a specialist charges for the 'correct' one. And have enough left over for another two...
