Cable behind oven

Hi Guys

I've been lurking here for a few weeks now and I must say thanks for all the hints, tips and advice. It's been really helpful.

I'm about to extend the ring main in my kitchen as there's only three sockets over the worktop, two being taken by washing machine+dryer and the other being the one on the oven switch. The current double socket is at one end of the worktop which covers the whole length of one wall, being split in two by the cooker. My plan is to take the cable (plain old T+E) along under the worktop, in pvc trunking on the wall behind the cupboards, diverting upward to sockets above every so often.

My question: Do I need extra protection from heat where the cable passes behind the oven, and if so, what? It's a freestanding fan assisted oven with halogen hob on the top, and the cable will be running at about a foot below worktop height when it reaches the oven.

I doubt whether it will be hot enough behind the cooker to cause the cable to fail - but you may need to de-rate it in terms of current carrying capacity.

Are you planning to connect the additional sockets to a single spur - or are you going to extend the ring properly. If it's a spur, it will need to be taken via an FCU, with a suitable fuse for protecting the (de-rated) 2.5mm^2 cable (or whatever you are using).

I don't think that the heat will be your problem.

If you are going to do this yourself you will fall foul of "Part P" of the electrical regulations that make this sort of work in a kitchen notifiable and subject to a building control fee payable to the local council and (possibly) inspection before the work is passed.
