Building insurance with (DIY) public liability

Is there an insurance company that can provide building insurance while renovations are being carried out.

Most of the work is being done by myself so I need it to include (or rather doesn't exclude) a DIY public liability cover if there's any damage to neighbouring properties or people.

Thanks.

If you are living there, then your standard home insurance policy (with accidental damage?) should cover all DIY disasters including damage to neighbouring properties. I managed to cause some damage to my neighbours property, and my insurer said I should be covered, but stipulated that my neighbour needed to claim off his insurance then mine would pay his insurer (its currently ongoing, but may not reach insurance as it looks like the damage I caused may be a lot less than originally thought).

many house insurance policies cover this, just ask your present/prospective insurer.

Just read my policy documents again (Liverpool Victoria) and I seem to have a =A32mil liability cover. DIY work isn't mentioned so I presume I'm covered.

The works will probably take about three/four months and I won't be moving in until it's completed - although I'll be on site almost everyday.

Is it worth finding more a specialised insurer? Can anyone recommend one?

Presumably you've already got a buildings policy which covers you for having an empty property (the fact that you visit it daily is not the same thing as living there, in insurance-speak)? Also, I suspect that your policy won't cover you for any damage to the building incurred by your efforts - I think there's usually small print that means that 'accidental damage' is limited to stuff like a broken window rather than a house collapsing because the owner 'accidentally' took out the wrong wall... I doubt you'll find a policy which does cover you for that sort of stuff TBH, if you're not a pro tradesman. I once looked around a bit a while ago, and couldn't find anything suitable.

yes, OP must mention this else the policy would likely be invalid.

When I last asked they were very interested in whether I was planning to underpin. Insurance for that has its limits, as only ones relatives can benefit.

Your Building/contents insurance probably will cover 3rd part liability. BUT Will probably not cover damage to your own property caused by building work, renovations or alterations.

I looked into this when renewing my policy recently and couldnt find any mainstream insurance companies which did cover for this damage.
